Women For Transformation Conference & Honours
December 20, 2022
FreeSUB-THEME: Engendering Nation-building, Societal Development, and Continental Advancement Through Gender Collaboration And Women’s Inclusion In Leadership, Governance, And Economic Growth.
Introduction
Under the visionary leadership and initiative of our Founder/Global Chief Executive, Ambassador Shirley Nkechinyere Hills, the ‘WOMEN FOR TRANSFORMATION (CONFERENCE AND HONOURS)’ in this maiden edition, has been birthed and designed by the ELITE Women Network International (EWNI) as one of our latest annual signature Projects from our ‘ELITE Leadership Empowerment & Advancement Program’ running in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) 5 (Gender Equality), and 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth) – two core focus areas upon which we run advocacy for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, and their inclusion in Leadership, Governance, Nation-building, and Economic Growth.
Quite timely in this season when our Home Country (the Federal Republic of Nigeria) is navigating a new investiture of leadership, and Africa and the rest of the world are looking to us to get it right this time, as an organization, we have deemed it necessary to put our voice where it matters and have the bold conversations that will enable us to make our own mark in driving a new narrative in this regard, thereby providing the platform and support for more women to venture into leadership and governance, while recognizing the ones who have had the courage to rise, thrive, and take the lead for the greater good of all, as well as the men who have stood out for our collective cause.
Goal
To inspire and encourage our societies to foster an enabling environment for women’s continuous participation in leadership, governance, nation-building and economic growth, as well as embrace the role and contribution of women and girls in effective societal transformation, while equipping women with the capacity and support for efficient and impactful governance in both private and public sectors for sustainable development and global advancement.
Objectives
- To awaken women’s participation in leadership, governance and nation-building.
- To optimize awareness on the advocacy for gender inclusion, diversity and equity for advancing National and Continental socio-economic growth.
- To empower women (and girls) to be agents of change for the growth and advancement of society.

The participation of women in political decision-making structures is very insignificant. Today the proportion of women elected and appointed into political office is well below 30%. This situation looks very ugly for our country; where women are not considered fit to lead as obtained in other societies. Institutional as well as cultural, economic, and societal factors limit women’s opportunities and abilities to participate in decision-making.

The continued under-representation of women in governance in Nigeria has been established as one of the major setbacks for her socio-economic development; because it denies the nation the opportunity of drawing on the full range of human resources available for its progress and making the needs of women and girls invisible in policies. Having more women in governance will not only help to promote gender equality but also bring about humane policies that will positively affect the lives of Nigerians.
The good news: Nigerian companies scored better than the global average in the participation of women in the workforce. The average percentage of women at the executive level is 20 percent which is higher than the global average of 17 percent. Furthermore, the average percentage of women at the board level is 23 percent, which is close to the average of 25 percent globally. This implies that the private sector is closing the gap in gender equality.
